A foggy coastal village. A poisoned scone. One amateur sleuth with everything to lose.

Iris Penhaligon inherited a tea shop on the California coast, a Russian Blue cat with opinions, and a town that still thinks the Mariposa belonged to her great-aunt. She expected recipes, gossip, and a difficult first week. She did not expect a body in the storeroom.

When feared food critic Vivienne Marsh dies after one bite of a rosemary-lemon scone at the Mariposa Tea Shop's soft launch, every clue points back to Iris: the foxglove, the recipe, the locked-room timing, and the fact that the new owner had everything to lose.

To save her shop, her freedom, and the only home she has left, Iris turns pastry-chef instinct into amateur sleuthing. With help from a sharp-eyed bookseller, a stubborn sheriff, a complicated old flame, and Earl Grey the cat, she must read her late great-aunt's diaries and uncover the secret one of Monarch Cove's oldest families would kill to keep buried.

Murder at the Mariposa Tea Shop is a cozy culinary mystery set in a foggy coastal California village — perfect for readers who love small-town secrets, tea shop mysteries, cat companions, women sleuths, and first-in-series mysteries with warmth, wit, recipes, and a body behind the scones.

Includes Iris's recipe for Marigold's Rosemary-Lemon Scones (without the foxglove).

About the Author

Petronella Locke

Author Petronella Locke

Petronella Locke grew up in St. Ives, Cornwall, where the fog rolls in like a cat looking for somewhere warm to sleep.

A former rare-cookbook archivist, she spent twenty-five years cataloguing other people's recipes before she finally sat down to write some sentences of her own. She now lives in a converted boatshed on the Mendocino coast in northern California with a Russian Blue cat named, of course, Earl Grey, and a small intractable garden full of foxgloves she does not have the heart to pull up. She returns to Cornwall for two months every year, usually in autumn, when the light is best and the tourists have gone home.

Murder at the Mariposa Tea Shop is the first novel in the Monarch Cove Mystery series. She is at work on the second.

She believes the best teas are the ones you have already burnt yourself with, and the best mysteries are the ones you have already half-solved before the sleuth.
